My name is Janneke, on my travels in India I learned Jahnika in Sanskrit means magic carpet.
I do love working with text and with textile. I love making tents, dressing up and storytelling. 
As a textile wizard I’m into sourcing materials, dressing the spirit of the play and weaving horizons. Videos result from often personal rituals.

In a world that is growing together and falling apart at the same time, I am looking for peace within. This is something I learn from Indian spirituality and by learning from teacher plants walking the Camino Rojo. I do get sad when I see the state the planet is in, as if we have been painting the world and are still mixing paint and have added so many colours that the paint has turned a an undefined grey. I'm tuning into a belief that when we keep on stirring in a special way, a new colour will appear. I wish and prey for a world where our children get to weave this magical colour into their web of prayers and into their horizons.

In the Indian mythology I read one world will transform into another. And I read that making love is to contribute to the patina of the world. I like to explore that patina, that is the glory of decay. Patina, like the cracks in the varnish of an oilpainting, increases the appreciation of something falling apart. There is no gloss without friction.

I strip off leather couches at the garbage to make backpacks, I collect feathers of unwanted wild ducks to make ceremonial collars, I melt T-shirts into plastic bags that rip open into unique patterns and I make bathrobes from forgotten towels at a sweatlodge.

Mijn naam is Janneke Raaphorst, ik ben kunstenaar en ontwerper. De benadering in mijn werk met textiel is drievoudig. Ik ontgin materiaal en de verhalen erachter; objecten krijgen betekenis door middel van rituelen en storytelling, en ik bied belichaamd handwerken aan, waarbij met wijsheid in het lichaam wordt gewerkt.

Bewust van de betoverende werking van textiel, werk ik onder de noemer textiel wysard (textile wizard). Als je ervan uitgaat dat alles energie is, en een wysard bewust met energie om gaat. Dan werkt een textiel wysard met de kracht van textiel in alle levensfases van een lap, van bron tot vod.

Zo verken ik de glorie van verval en vier ik het patina van de wereld. Mijn video’s zijn het resultaat van persoonlijke rituelen en de helende kracht van storytelling. Met krachtobjecten en door het inlijsten van items als artefacten werk ik met de gevoelswaarde van textiel.

De waarde van het weven van de horizon is voor mij het vinden van een plek op de aarde. De horizon is het verst dat je de aarde kunt zien voordat je de ruimte in kijkt. Het is een lijn die even denkbeeldig als waarneembaar is. Gedachten die opdoemen tijdens dit handwerk op de grens van het conceptuele deel ik in teksten: bijvoorbeeld over de waarde van weven in de huidige westerse economie, over weven in metaforen in het Vedische India en over het denken zelf.

Met dezelfde intimiteit als in persoonlijke werken, verzamel ik verhalen uit een gemeenschap. In samenwerking met Sarah van Lamsweerde maakte ik de video-installatie 'De Aanraakbaren', met geritualiseerde ontmoetingen tussen mensen met verschillende visuele capaciteiten, gebruikmakend van een textiele aanraaktaal.

Als schrijver/performer nodig ik het publiek uit tot belichaming via begeleide reizen. Ik leidde 'Reparatie Meditaties' voor de online naaikrans georganiseerd door de Feministische Handwerkpartij en Atria, kennisinstituut voor emancipatie en vrouwengeschiedenis.
